Dan Albano’s Fab 5 outstanding girls basketball players last week, Feb. 19:

Liana Hwang, Sonora, Jr.

Hwang averaged 16.5 points in playoff victories against Antelope Valley and Torrance to help the Raiders reach the CIF-SS Division 2A quarterfinals.

Cayla Mercadel, Capistrano Valley Christian, Sr.

Mercadel, the Eagles’ lone remaining player from their CIF-SS championship team in 2022, scored 35 points in a 37-34 win against Hamilton in the first round of the Division 5AA playoffs. She suffered a knee injury in a second round loss against Costa Mesa but reached 1,000 career points in the game. Mercadel averaged 19.8 points for the season.

Sophia Rangel, Loara, Jr.

Rangel had 26 points, 17 rebounds and four steals in a 51-45 win against San Gabriel Academy in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 5AA playoffs.

Anna Shreeve, San Juan Hills, Sr.

The Utah Valley signee scored a season-high 30 points and had a school-record 11 steals in a 68-56 win against Diamond Bar in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 2A playoffs. She had 26 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in a first round victory against San Dimas.

Izzy Sims, San Clemente, So.

The forward averaged 17.5 points in playoff victories against Valencia of Valencia and JSerra to help the Tritons reach the CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinals. She scored 10 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 70-68 win against JSerra in the second round.
