SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The NBA All-Star festivities will be happening in the Bay Area this weekend. A lot of basketball happening, but the weekend is about more than sports.
NBA All-Star weekend is truly a Bay Area-wide event. Yes, Chase Center will be hosting games, but across the bridge at the Oakland Arena, there will also be games and events.
Fans and players have been gearing up for the excitement of the NBA All-Star Weekend. The best players in the country take center stage, but the weekend isn’t just about basketball.

NBA Vice President of Social Impact Eric DiMiceli is in charge of organizing five days of programming including a day of service for kids Friday afternoon.
“We’ll be at Brett Heart Elementary School, right in San Francisco. We’re doing a series of work there. The Warriors player Draymond Green will be a part of that project,” DiMiceli said.
NBA players will also be making a stop at the East Oakland Pride Elementary School to help renovate the school’s library. It’s not just charity work happening in the Bay Area, games will also be happening at the Oakland Arena.
“They are going to have a live event for the NBA Celebrity Game,” said Oakland city councilmember Ken Houston.
Houston is excited to host the celebrity game in his district as well as the HBCU Classic on Saturday at Oakland Arena.
“Exciting part about it is that Oakland lost what three teams and this brings back some enthusiasm,” Houston said.
Oakland’s restaurants and hotels are ready getting ready to handle the crowds.
Visit Oakland CEO Peter Gamez says hotels curated specific packages for guests booking during NBA All-Star Weekend — a chance for the city to show off its positives and change public perception.
“It gets people to our town they actually go out, experience the vibrancy of our restaurants and they share it with friends,” Gamez said.
In addition to giving back to public schools in the area, the NBA also has a commitment this year to address food insecurity. Players and volunteers will be at the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank Friday packing meals for the roughly 50,000 households the food bank serves each week.
