(FOX40.COM) — After 35 years, the remains of a woman found in Colfax in 1990 have been identified as a woman who was last seen on Halloween 1989 in Berkeley, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.
The remains of then-21-year-old Wendy Abrams-Nishikai were discovered off an embankment of Yankee Jims Road in remote Placer County.
Investigators at the time were unable to identify Abrams-Nishikai’s remains and listed her as a Jane Doe cold case.
In 2023, the sheriff’s office’s Cold Case Investigation team reopened the case and utilized modern forensic technology to advance the case.
The California Department of Justice Laboratory in Richmond was able to identify a possible next of kin in 2024 and establish a DNA profile that matched Abrams-Nishikai.
By obtaining additional DNA samples from family members, the sheriff’s office was able to officially identify the remains in January 2025.
