A California corrections officer is recovering after being stabbed twice by an inmate using a makeshift weapon, authorities announced Monday.
The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Richard J. Donovan Correction Center (RJD), a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) news release stated.
“Incarcerated person Nelson Barrera allegedly used an improvised weapon to stab an officer, striking the officer’s protective vest twice,” the release stated.
The officer managed to leave the area after the stabbing and call for help while responding staff blocked Barrera in his cell.
Barrera then injured his arms and hands when he punched a security window as the staff was trying unsuccessfully to get him to drop the weapon, the CDCR stated.
Eventually, Barrera surrendered without further incident and gave the staff two improvised weapons. He was then handcuffed and treated for his injuries at a Triage Treatment Area.
He was transferred to another institution following the incident but the location was not disclosed.
Barrera was sent to RJD from San Francisco County in 2011 after being sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for second-degree murder and intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury or death.
“The injured officer was treated and medically cleared at the institution and is resting at home,” the CDCR stated.
The incident remains under investigation by prison officials.
