Police released video footage on Friday of a dangerous high-speed pursuit through multiple San Bernardino County cities that ended with officers opening fire on a domestic violence suspect.

It happened at 12:06 a.m. on March 10, 2025, according to the Chino Police Department, when dispatch received calls reporting a domestic violence incident that left a woman bleeding from her head in the 14000 block of Monte Vista Avenue.

Surveillance video angled at a parking lot shows the suspect, identified as 47-year-old Jose Martinez of Rialto, assaulting the victim – who told police that she was Martinez’s girlfriend at the time.

At the start, Martinez and the unidentified victim are seen after getting to the lot and exiting their cars, seeming to be talking at first – though sound from the scene is not heard in the video.

The situation quickly escalates moments later in the edited footage, with Martinez hastily snatching the victim’s arm, yanking her toward his white Jeep SUV.

Martinez struggles for a moment to force his girlfriend into his rear passenger seat and, once he thinks she’s secured inside, he runs to the driver’s side door.

The victim managed to escape, but not for long.

“As the victim ran from Martinez’s vehicle, Martinez caught her, and then slammed her head into a light pole and struck her multiple times,” said the video’s narrator. “Martinez attempted to drag the victim back into his vehicle again, but was unsuccessful.”

Martinez is seen ditching his girlfriend, who was lying on the pavement between cars, and getting back into his Jeep before driving away from the scene.

Officials said the victim was transported to a local hospital via ambulance and was treated for injuries sustained to her head and face. Her health status was not immediately revealed.

Detectives responded to the parking lot to pursue the investigation and, around 11:30 a.m., found Martinez leaving a Fontana residence in his white Jeep SUV.

“Martinez is a convicted felon,” the video noted later on. “He was recently released from state prison after serving 18 years for manslaughter with a firearm.”

Officers attempted to stop Martinez’s vehicle, but he did not comply. He instead rammed into two cruisers – one in front of and one behind him – and took off, thus initiating the chase.

“Martinez then led police officers on an extremely dangerous high-speed pursuit on the freeway and surface streets through the cities of Fontana, Upland, Ontario, Chino and Montclair,” said the narrator.

During this chase, police said Martinez sped over 100 mph and ran multiple red lights, displaying “extreme disregard for the safety of the motoring public.”

The pursuit came to an end around noon in the 10800 block of Kadota Avenue in Montclair after an officer successfully used a PIT maneuver on Martinez’s Jeep.

However, Martinez still refused to surrender or leave his SUV.

The standoff continued for more than an hour, with crisis negotiators urging Martinez to surrender peacefully, police said.

“You make decisions for yourself, you say your own story,” a negotiator is heard saying over a megaphone speaker. “Don’t do anything dumb that makes us make a decision for you. You’re doing a good job, come on out.”

For reasons that are under investigation, Martinez abruptly got out of his car and took a “two-handed shooting stance,” pointing a black object at officers.

Police then opened fire and hit him an undisclosed number of times, though the video captures at least two gunshots while simultaneously releasing a K-9 unit on Martinez as he collapses face-first onto the ground.

First responders rendered medical aid to Martinez at the scene before taking him to the hospital, where he was last listed to be in critical condition.

It was later determined that the object Martinez was holding was a portable battery pack, which photos shared by the Chino Police Department appeared to show him holding in his hands as if it were a gun.

This incident is under three different investigations, according to police.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the police shooting; the Fontana Police Department is investigating an assault with a deadly weapon for Martinez allegedly ramming police with his car; and the Chino Police Department will investigate the initial domestic violence and attempted kidnapping, as well as if the police shooting in line with department policy.
