OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — Oakland police have confirmed the 16-year-old boy arrested Friday for the killing of 15-year-old Derbing Alvarado has been charged with his murder.
“The District Attorney’s Office charged the suspect with the murder of Derbing Alvarado, with robbery and with the discharging of a firearm during the commission of a serious, violent felony. There are no outstanding suspects in this case,” said Lt. Gloria Beltran of Oakland Police Department (OPD).
Derbing was shot and killed last Monday afternoon in the 1400 block of 100th Avenue. As he and friends walked to soccer practice, police said the suspect attempted to steal his backpack.
“During the confrontation, the suspect fired multiple times at Durbing, striking him and killing him,” said Lt. Beltran.
Police said the 16-year-old suspect was arrested just three days later thanks to help from the community.
“The community provided us information about what they heard from the other persons who were there and then, who they just believe might have been involved,” said Lt. Beltran. “I can’t go into details of exactly what they said, but the information that the community provided was valuable.”
Police said a gun was found when police searched the 16-year-old’s home, but they’re awaiting lab results to confirm it was the actual gun used in the killing. In the meantime, police are offering this advice for concerned parents.
“Parents, I encourage them to talk to their children, be aware of where they’re at, and then, if they are confronted, not to struggle, not to fight with the suspects,” said Lt. Beltran.
Police don’t believe the victim and suspect knew each other. A detention hearing has been set for Tuesday to see if the 16-year-old must remain in custody pending trial.
