(KRON) — The fate of former UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez is in the hands of a South Bay judge. Velasquez is awaiting sentencing for attempted murder in connection to a 2022 shooting.
The former champ could be looking at decades in prison. According to prosecutors, he went on a shooting spree targeting the man accused of molesting his child.
Velasquez, prosecutors say, opened fire on Harry Goularte’s vehicle with Goularte and two others inside. Velasquez, 42, missed his intended target, but he shot Goularte’s father-in-law, Paul Binder, instead.
The daycare attended by Velaquez’s child at the time was owned by Goularte’s mother.
Last August, Velasquez entered a plea of “no contest.”
The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office is seeking a sentence of 25 years to life in prison. Velasquez’s defense has asked for no prison time.
The judge in the case is expected to announce Velasquez’s sentencing at 1:30 p.m. Monday. KRON4 has reporters on the scene and will bring you updates from the courtroom.
