SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Renowned San Francisco bakery will be opening a Union Square kiosk, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s office announced Monday. The kiosk will see the bakery offer “a selection of its signature pastries, including the famous kouign-amann, for residents, workers, and visitors,” Lurie’s office said.
The bakery has committed to operating the kiosk for at least one year, following a last-minute pop-up activation during the NBA All-Star Weekend last month. The city tapped b. Patisserie to run the kiosk during the busy All-Star Weekend following the abrupt departure of celebrity chef Tyler Florence, who was previously operating two culinary kiosks on the square.
The b. Patisserie expansion, according to the mayor’s office, is another step in Mayor Lurie’s efforts to revitalize San Francisco’s beleaguered downtown and Union Square neighborhoods. There has been an exodus of tentpole retailers like Nordstrom and Macy’s from the area in recent years.
However, Lurie’s office touted the recent moves from companies like Databricks, Strava, and JP Morgan, which have expanded, or committed to expand their footprints downtown.
“b. Patisserie’s arrival in Union Square is a clear example of the momentum we’re building in downtown San Francisco,” Mayor Lurie said Monday. “As a fan of their food, I’m excited to see them join a growing and vibrant mix of businesses in this historic area.”
b. Patisserie first opened in San Francisco in 2013 and is owned by award-winning chef Belinda Leong and her business partner Michel Suas. Known for its European-inspired pastries, the bakery received a James Beard Award for Outstanding Baker.
The bakery was signed a one-year least on the cafe kiosk at 350 Powell Street previously occupied by Tyler Florence’s Miller & Lux Provisions Patisserie.
