(KRON) — A newly-hired teaching assistant at a South Bay school was arrested on Monday after staff found “sexually suggestive photos involving minors” on his USB drive, the Santa Clara County’s Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies responded to Chandler Tripp School, located at 780 Thornton Way in unincorporated San Jose, after staff reported seeing inappropriate photos on the drive.
Kirk McFarland III, 72, of San Jose was identified as the suspect. He admitted to deputies “that he had viewed and downloaded sexually suggestive images of minors from the Internet,” SCCSO said.
McFarland said he has not taken inappropriate photos of students. He had been employed by the school for just more than a month, but SCCSO described him as a “longtime teaching assistant.”
He was charged with one count of possession of child sexual abuse material.
The Santa Clara County Office of Education wrote a formal letter about the situation to inform families.
SCCSO’s investigation into McFarland is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call (408) 808-4500 or submit an anonymous tip to (408) 808-4431.
