(FOX40.COM) — Law enforcement in Northern California is investigating a possible infant found dead inside of a dumpster Monday afternoon.

Around 3:40 p.m., the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office and medical personnel responded to a report of a potentially deceased infant found outside a business in the 800 block of South 9th Street in Modesto.

When first responders arrived at the scene, they discovered what appeared to be the remains of a fetus. SCSO said it identified a person of interest and is in the process of questioning them.

The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office also responded to the scene and will conduct an autopsy to determine whether the remains are those of a baby. If so, the coroner will assess the gestational age.

SCSO sent a reminder to the public about safe surrender options available throughout the county.

“Citizens who are unable to care for a newborn may anonymously surrender their baby at designated Safe Baby Surrender locations without fear of prosecution,” SCSO said.
