(KRON) — An 11-year-old wolf named Sequoia died recently at the Oakland Zoo. The wolf has several offspring in the zoo, including wolves Arroyo, Lassen, Sonora, and Anza.
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of Sequoia. We are monitoring the wolf pack closely, but so far, they are coping well with the loss of their dad,” zoo officials wrote Wednesday. The pack lives in the zoo’s sprawling California Trail exhibit.
Zookeeper Alicia said, “Much like his namesake, Sequoia was a tall, proud, majestic pillar of California Trail. He was the bedrock for his mate Siskiyou, but really came into his own when he got to raise four cubs. His legacy and impact live on in his offspring and in the many stories we will all share about him for years to come.”
Earlier this February, Sequoia experienced a rapid and unexpected decline in health before he was euthanized, according to the Oakland Zoo.
