(KRON) — A man was arrested for an alleged attempted sexual assault near University Village in Albany, the University of California Police Department announced Friday. The alleged incident took place on Tuesday between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. on the pathway between Eighth Street and Tenth Street adjacent to the baseball fields at UVA, police said.
The victim, a female who was riding her bicycle at the time, was grabbed from behind and pulled off her bike, according to UCPD. Police said she was able to use pepper spray on the suspect and escape before he could drag her to the bushes.
She did not suffer any injuries.
The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Andrew McNear, was somewhat acquainted with the victim, police said. The victim was able to help UCPD identify him.
Police obtained an arrest warrant for McNear and took him into custody early Friday morning. The case will now be referred to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution consideration, police said.
