(KRON) — The last remaining JCPenney on the Peninsula is shutting its doors for good. The JCPenney in San Bruno’s Tanforan mall is permanently closing in May, a JCPenney representative confirmed to KRON4.com.

The Tanforan store will join Daly City, which closed in 2019, as the last locations in San Mateo County. As of now, including the San Bruno store, there are eight JCPenneys in the Bay Area. The other seven are located in Antioch, Concord, Fairfield, Hayward, Pleasanton, San Jose and Santa Rosa.

“The decision to close a store is never an easy one,” the spokesperson said. “We are grateful to our dedicated associates and the loyal customers who have shopped at our San Bruno location.”

“We continue to work to make every dollar count for families across America and welcome them to shop at our other JCPenney stores in the area and at JCPenney.com,” the spokesperson added.

The closure comes nearly three years after the Tanforan mall was sold to a real estate developer for roughly $300 million. Plans are to turn the 44-acre shopping center, which had been around since the 1970s, into a biotech office space.

There are currently 63 JCPenney stores open in California, according to the retailer’s website.

JCPenney — once an anchor for most shopping malls nationwide since being founded in 1902 — has shut down hundreds of stores since 2020.

At one point in the 1970s, it had more than 1,900 locations in the United States. Since then, the department store has gone through tough times financially as it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020.

Today, there are more than 650 JCPenney stores across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
