SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — With San Francisco continuing to reel from an ongoing series of retail closures, SF residents in the North Beach area received some good news this week. Plans to open a new Grocery Outlet in the space formerly occupied by Safeway at the NorthPoint Centre shopping center near Fisherman’s Wharf took a significant step forward.

Supervisor Danny Sauter, Grocery Outlet, and the owner of the property where the store will open announced Thursday that a lease agreement had been signed and that the store will open next year. The new Grocery Outlet, according to officials, will bring “accessible and affordable grocery options to both residents and visitors in the surrounding area.”

Supervisor Sauter, who represents District 3 where the store will open, was an early supporter of the plan and worked with Grocery Outlet and Anchor Pacific Capital, the property owner. Following the closure of the Safeway in 2023, Sauter led a community petition to fill the space with a new, affordable grocer.

The petition, according to city officials, garnered over 1,000 signatures and “demonstrated significant community support for a new store.”

“I am thrilled that Grocery Outlet is coming to District 3. This opening will improve daily life and convenience for our District 3 residents, particularly nearby communities of North Beach and Chinatown. Residents need and deserve access to fresh and affordable groceries. I want to thank Grocery Outlet and Anchor Pacific Capital for their partnership and for their investment in our neighborhood,” said Sauter.

The 30,000-square-foot space Grocery Outlet will move into is located at 320 Bay Street and will be easily accessible to residents at the nearby Wharf Plaza, North Beach Place, and NorthPoint Vistas apartments.
