(KRON) — The Pinole Police Department is crediting recent arrests to a high-tech GPS tracker that officers launched during a stolen car chase. The technology allowed authorities to track the stolen vehicle in real time “without the need for a dangerous high-speed chase,” police said.

The police pursuit started on Thursday at 4:26 p.m. when the driver of a stolen vehicle failed to yield, according to Pinole PD. Officers opted to deploy a Star Chase projectile, a GPS tracker that is launched from a police vehicle and attaches to a suspect vehicle to follow its movements remotely.

“This innovative technology provided continuous updates on the vehicle’s location, enabling officers to safely monitor the situation,” police said.

The Star Chase system tracked the stolen car into Hercules, where Hercules Police Department officers assisted in using spike strips to puncture all four tires. Multiple suspects fled from the disabled vehicle on foot but were quickly arrested by Pinole PD officers, authorities said.

“This operation highlights how technology and collaboration keep our community safe,” Pinole police said, “by reducing the dangers of high-speed pursuits while ensuring accountability and swift action.”
