San Francisco hit-and-run suspect dead after police shooting Friday

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A man was shot and killed by police in San Francisco’s Union Square early Friday morning, according to authorities. The shooting occurred hours after two pedestrians and a bicyclist were struck in a related hit-and-run.

The San Francisco Police Department responded at 6:30 p.m. Thursday to the area of Kearny and Post streets on reports of multiple hit-and-runs by a single vehicle. Arriving officers learned that a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed mounted the sidewalk and struck a woman and a girl. Shortly after, the suspect vehicle struck a bicyclist in the area of Sutter and Kearny streets.

At 1:35 a.m. Friday, SFPD officers found the suspect vehicle near Grant Avenue and Post Street. During contact with a man inside the vehicle, police shot the occupant, who authorities said was armed.

Officers provided aid before paramedics transported the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. No officers were reported to be injured during the confrontation.

The two pedestrians were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. SFPD said the bicyclist was not located.

The investigation into the police shooting remains active. Officials are advising the public to avoid the area of Grant Avenue and Post Street on Friday morning as police remain at the scene.
