This year has been kind to Los Angeles professional sports. Between a World Series title for the L.A. Dodgers, a MLS Cup championship for the L.A. Galaxy and winning seasons shaping up for the pair of NFL squads, residents of the Southland have been spoiled in 2024.
Who else is having a good year? The owners of those teams, as the annual valuation of professional sports teams by Forbes released on Dec. 12, and according to the report, the L.A.-area teams are worth a whole lot of money.
Of the 50 franchises on the list, No. 1 isn’t a surprise. For the ninth-straight year, the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys were ranked as the most valuable team in sports. Valued at more than $10 billion, it’s the first time a team has crossed the double-digit threshold in the billions.
At No. 2 was a California team, but not one that most Angelenos are too fond of. The Golden State Warriors, the franchise fresh off of a four-championship dynasty that is making a push for another one this season, is worth $7.6 billion according to the publication.
The third-most valuable team is where L.A. comes to play. Perhaps surprising to some, the franchise in Southern California that’s worth the most dough is the L.A. Rams of the NFL.
The 2021 Super Bowl champions are worth about $7.55 billion, according to Forbes. A large chunk of that could be due to the franchise’s home, SoFi Stadium, which in just four years of operation has become a major hub for L.A. entertainment.
There would be no list of valuable sports franchises without the Purple and Gold, of course. The L.A. Lakers took the eighth spot on the list, valued at about $7.1 billion.
Other teams on the list included the No. 23 L.A. Clippers ($5.5B), No. 24 L.A. Dodgers ($5.45B) and No. 31 L.A. Chargers ($5.1B).
