SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — For the seventh year in a row, commercial Dungeness crab season is being pushed back by at least two weeks, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Friday. The late start of Dec. 1 may cause issues for many fishermen in San Francisco and along the California coast.

State wildlife officials are trying to protect humpback whales from becoming entangled in trap and buoy lines. When this happens, those whales can drag traps around for months, leaving them injured, starved or even so exhausted they drown.

The commercial season opener was originally scheduled to begin Nov. 15 for much of the California coast but has now been pushed back to Dec. 1. Officials will then reevaluate the risk for humpback whales and decide on an official start date.

The commercial Dungeness crab season delay affects fishing zones south of the Sonoma/Mendocino County line.

The commercial crab industry is one of California’s major fisheries, with shellfish being the most popular during the holidays.
