Officials with the California Highway Patrol have closed down northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway in the Boyle Heights area after reports of a shooting, officials confirmed to KTLA.

Details are limited, but CHP said officers responded to reports of a wrong-way driver and a shooting on the northbound 5 Freeway near Lorena Street just after 4 p.m., and added that it’s unclear if the shooting occurred on the freeway.

Early reports indicate that there are at least two victims, one of which was rushed to the hospital in unknown condition. The second victim’s condition was not immediately available, though aerial footage from Sky 5 showed a white canopy over a vehicle, a BMW, on the inside shoulder of the freeway.

Canopies are typically used during investigations that involve fatalities.

Aerial footage of the incident also showed first responders on the freeway near a white Tesla, with damage to the driver’s side frontend, as well as several other vehicles stopped in the roadway.

CHP could be seen walking along the freeway in a line, likely searching for evidence of the alleged shooting.

Traffic was backed for what appears to be miles, reaching all the way back to the 605 Freeway due to the closure.

“Sigalert update in East Los Angeles: NB I-5 at Lorena Street, all northbound lanes remain closed until further notice due to police activity,” CHP said in a post to X, formerly Twitter. “Northbound traffic is being diverted to I-710.”

This developing story will be updated when additional details are made available.
