Philz Coffee is at long last ready to get brewing in Dana Point.
The café is part of a mixed-use residential and retail complex at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Golden Lantern. The development, approved in 2016 with Philz as its first signed retail tenant, will include 39 apartments, commercial space and subterranean parking.
Signs at the complex indicate Philz is coming soon. While the company could not be reached for an update on an opening day, it is hiring barista positions. Starting wages are estimated at $20-$21 hourly.
The company sells an array of coffee drinks made from sustainably farmed beans, which are roasted in Oakland. Cafés also sell tea, bread and pastries.

Trader Joe’s debuts in Ladera Ranch
Orange County’s newest Trader Joe’s opened Friday, Aug. 16 in Ladera Ranch.
The 14,985-square-foot store replaced a shuttered Staples office supply store at 27542 Antonio Parkway. It’s the 193rd in California.
The Monrovia-based grocery chain quietly added eight new Southern California “coming soon” stores to its website in May. At that time, the company’s public relations manager said there was no timeline for the store openings.
The Inland Empire is getting a new store in Murrieta at a former OfficeMax store. Los Angeles County is getting four stores in four cities. A store coming to South Pasadena, near the chain’s founding city, is heading into a shuttered Vons. San Diego County is getting two stores.

Americana pizza opens in San Clemente
Parlor, Woodfire Kitchen & Cocktails, is open in San Clemente.
Launched as a dinner-only eatery by restaurateur Russ Bendel and his partners, the restaurant at 216 N. El Camino Real sits across the street from Vine, another of Bendel’s seven restaurants.
The Register’s food writer, Brock Keeling, listed Parlor among his list of pizza places “to try right now.”
RJB Restaurant Group, created by Bendel with partners Jared Cook, Gabe Whorley and Kyle Simpson, owns and operates Ironwood in Laguna Hills, Olea in Newport Beach, Sapphire in Laguna Beach and Bloom in San Juan Capistrano.
The menu at Parlor includes starters, salads, plates, wood-fired pizzas, pasta and dessert.

PK-3 program coming to Vanguard
Vanguard University in Costa Mesa is launching this fall a PK-3 program that will credential students as early childhood education specialists.
The program comes as demand for teachers rises to meet a new mandate to offer public, pre-kindergarten schooling for all 4-year-olds.
The program enables undergrad students to earn a credential to teach pre-kindergarten up to third-grade classes in just four years while pursuing their bachelor’s degree.
Student candidates also can complete the PK-3 credential at Vanguard as graduate students.
The program was fast-tracked with a $233,099 grant from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Courses will be offered completely online to accommodate the needs of adults and mid-career professionals.

Lisa Argyros is the recipient of the 2024 Freedom of the Seas Humanitarian Service Award. The award recognizes those who provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. Argyros is co-chair of the Argyros Family Foundation, which supports children, after-school programs, education, health care, hospitals and the arts. The Freedom of the Seas Awards is a yearly event of the National Museum of the Surface Navy at the Battleship Iowa in San Pedro.
