JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano will hold its 2nd annual Adelante Fest this Saturday, Aug. 17, bringing students and the larger community together to embrace their faith.

The festival will include a vigil Mass in the school gym at 4:00 p.m., followed by activities for all ages, live music, games and food from local food trucks on the JSerra football field. Adult tickets are $28 general admission, and $18 for children ages 5 through 15.

The main event is a live interview with actor Jonathan Roumie, who portrays “Jesus” in “The Chosen,” a popular TV series about the life of Jesus Christ. Organizer Grace Greiner said that Roumie’s role has made him a “prominent figure in modern Catholic evangelization,” bringing the gap between traditional faith teachings and contemporary storytelling.

“Adelante Fest 2024 is being held to foster community, faith formation, and educational growth,” said Greiner. The festival “aims to bring people together during a period of renewal and reflection.”

The festival’s namesake, “Adelante,” is a core initiative for the high school, focused on building a vibrant Catholic community through different events.

St. Junipero Serra, founder of the first nine California missions, lived by the phrase “Siempre Adelante, Nunca Atras,” meaning “Always forward, never backward,” JSerra officials said. The high school’s “Adelante” motto aspires to look outward to build community and welcome all people of faith.

Last year’s inaugural Adelante Fest included keynote speaker Rev. Mike Schmitz, a popular Catholic priest and author known for his podcast, “The Bible in a Year.”

“This event is a unique opportunity for families and community members to come together and enjoy a day of fun, faith, and fellowship,” said Patrick Reidy, vice president of Mission and Faith at JSerra High School. “We are especially honored to welcome Jonathan Roumie and look forward to the inspiration and joy his presence will bring to our community.”
