One of the widely-speculated football transfers of the offseason has clarity with the season fast approaching.

Newport Harbor junior quarterback Cole Leinart has transferred to Redondo and will observe a sitout period, according to the CIF-SS website.

Leinart, the son of USC Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart, transferred last fall to Newport Harbor from Mater Dei. Matt Leinart was a standout quarterback at Mater Dei before heading to USC and the NFL.

At Redondo, the sitout period for Leinart (6-4, 190) runs through Sept. 28, which means he won’t face a trio of Orange County teams in the nonleague portion of the Sea Hawks’ schedule. Redondo is scheduled to open against El Dorado on Aug. 30 and later plays Huntington Beach on Sept. 13 and Orange on Sept. 20.

The CIF-SS states that the decision on Leinart’s eligibility was rendered on Tuesday.

He also will observe a sitout period in basketball that runs through Dec. 27.

At Newport Harbor, senior Bode Stefano and junior Jake Meer are competing for the starting quarterback position, first-year coach Matt Burns said. The Sailors lost starting quarterback Jaden O’Neal to a transfer to Narbonne.
