Softball playoffs roundup: Mater Dei and Oxford Academy roll into semifinals

Mater Dei’s softball team scored five runs in the first inning and Sienna Acosta earned her second victory of the playoffs as the Monarchs defeated Beaumont 9-3 in the CIF-SS Division 2 quarterfinals Thursday at Fountain Valley Sports Park.

Acosta, a junior, allowed one run on four hits in 5 2/3 innings for Mater Dei (14-11), which advances to play at Gahr in the semifinals Saturday.

Gahr defeated fourth-seeded Rio Mesa 9-0 in another quarterfinal on Thursday. The Gladiators earlier eliminated El Toro and Tesoro.

Seniors Cat Kawabe and Jayleen Scott each drove in three runs to help pace Mater Dei’s offense against Texas-bound pitcher Cambria Salmon.

Jaelyn Toledo added two hits and a RBI for the Monarchs, an at-large playoff entry from the Trinity League.

In Division 7:

Oxford Academy 11, A.B. Miller 4: The host and top-seeded Patriots (24-5) turned a triple play and received a strong two-way performance from freshman Emily Ganguly to advance to Saturday’s semifinals. Oxford Academy will play at Riverside Prep.

Ganguly pitched a complete game and drove in three runs to lead the Patriots, an at-large team from the 605 League.

Ella Pace stayed hot at the plate by going 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for Oxford Academy. Monique Rojas had three hits and Kuhu Gupta added two RBIs.

The Patriots scored double-digit runs for the third consecutive playoff game.
