The Mission Viejo-Long Beach Poly football rivalry is scheduled to shift to SoFi Stadium this fall.
The Diablos have announced their 2024 schedule highlighted by a nonleague game against Long Beach Poly on Oct. 4 at SoFi Stadium, home to the NFL Rams and Chargers.
“Opportunity of a lifetime,” said Mission Viejo coach Chad Johnson, who confirmed the agreement with the Jackrabbits.
The current rivalry between Mission Viejo and Long Beach Poly began in 2003 under former Mission Viejo coach Bob Johnson and former Long Beach Poly coach Raul Lara.
The schools played nonleague games in 2003-4, 2010-11, 2016-17 and the past three seasons.
Veterans Stadium in Long Beach played hosted to the game in ’23.
Last fall, Downey and Warren became the first high school football teams to play a game at SoFi Stadium. The game reportedly drew more than 18,000 fans.
Mission Viejo’s nonleague schedule also includes games against Santa Margarita, Liberty of Nevada and Basha of Arizona. Liberty and Basha were among the top teams in their respective states last season.
The Diablos claimed the California state Division 1AA title in the fall by defeating De La Salle of Concord.
