Everyone knows Goodwill OC for its retail stores, but what many people may not realize is that, first and foremost, Goodwill OC is a local nonprofit employment social enterprise focused on providing the most comprehensive workforce development programs to the Orange County community.
In other words, the sale of donated goods at retail stores provides most of the revenue that is needed to achieve the mission: providing critical workforce development programs and services to more than 20,000 Orange County residents annually.
These programs encourage people to dream big through customized services, such as 1:1 job coaching, career planning, work experience, introductions to top local employers and much more, to help every individual achieve their goals.
As the most comprehensive workforce development program in Orange County, Goodwill OC provides resources and personal support to anyone in the community who wants to further their career, including individuals who are looking to learn new skills, adults with mental health diagnosis, Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals, individuals with developmental or physical disabilities, students or youth with past justice involvement, veterans, and more.

Creating a Positive Environmental Impact
Goodwill OC makes a substantial impact through collecting, sharing, reusing, recycling, extending use and redistributing goods – from fashion to home décor, electronics and more. Your donations are the first part of a multi-step process aimed at both protecting our environment and supporting our community.
In fact, last year alone, Goodwill of Orange County diverted more than 50 million pounds of goods away from local landfills.
So, how does it work?
Goodwill OC has four main outlets that help divert goods from landfills: thrift stores, outlet bins, its online marketplace, ShopGoodwill.com, and a robust recycling operation.
Clothing makes up a large portion of Goodwill OC’s donations each year, something that is obvious when you visit one of its 25 local stores. Stores stock racks of clothing items, from dresses, blouses, and t-shirts to kids clothing, business wear, and even wedding dresses.
According to a recent study by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the fashion industry produced 97 million tons of waste in 2023. What’s more, the report indicated that less than 1% of clothing is recycled. Clothing donations to Goodwill OC are the first step in breaking the cycle of textile waste.
Each item of clothing has a five-week rotation in-store. If after that period it has yet to find a new home, it moves to Goodwill OC’s bulk outlet, The Marketplace in Santa Ana, where clothing is then sold by the pound. Customers can sort through bins and find incredible items for great prices, extending the life of these pieces and consciously contributing to ending the surge of fast fashion.
If clothing does not sell in bulk, it then moves into the next stop on the textile journey within Goodwill: recycling. Goodwill OC partners with well-vetted, reputable nonprofit and for-profit recyclers to continue a textile’s useful lifespan, including turning them into products like carpet padding or insulation. Clothing items and other textiles that are torn, stained or otherwise unsellable or unwearable at the time of donation skip the in-store and outlet steps and move straight to recycling.
Through this process, Goodwill OC is committed to maximizing the impact of your donations and giving every donated item a second (and sometimes even third or fourth) chance.
